Exactly a month after its theatrical release and a few days into its OTT release, Rishab Shetty's Kantara: Chapter 1 has beaten Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava at the Box Office even in the domestic market. The blockbuster movie from the Kannada film industry which got a pan-Indian release has stolen the number 1 spot and is the highest grossing Indian film of 2025 in the domestic market as well.

Kantara: Chapter 1 overtakes Chhaava as highest grossing Indian film in the domestic market

Kantara: Chapter 1 took 31 days to beat Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava which held the top spot for the highest earning Indian film at the Box Office. The movie ended its Box Office run on day 29 with approximately Rs. 600 crore net in India. Kantara: Chapter 1 has now beaten the film with Rs. 607.05 crore net on day 31 (fifth Saturday), as per Sacnilk. As for the Indian gross collections too, while Chhaava had minted Rs. 716.91 crore in its lifetime run, Kantara: Chapter 1 has crossed that number too with Rs. 723.75 crore.

Factors to take into account when comparing Kantara: Chapter 1 with Chhaava

Kantara Chapter 1 is now the 2nd highest grosser of 2025, behind Chaava

Although Kantara: Chapter 1 has broken Chhaava's record, it is also to be noted that the film was a pan-Indian release. This means that the Rishab Shetty starring film got an advantage of more language versions contributing to its Box Office collection. On the other hand, Chhaava came as a Hindi and Marathi centric film which managed to leave a mark and stay the highest grossing film for almost all of 2025 (the movie released in February 2025 and remained untouched as the highest grossing Indian film so far). Moreover, Chhaava's theatrical run ended on day 29 with higher numbers than Kantara: Chapter 1 at that point. It took Kantara: Chapter 1 more than a month to beat Chhaava at the Box Office and thus, both the films have performed immensely well and remain a blockbuster.

Kantara: Chapter 1 beats Chhaava at Worldwide Gross

Just a few days back, Kantara: Chapter 1 beat Chhaava at the Worldwide Box Office in gross collections. It crossed Rs. 800 crore-mark, which hints that the movie was performing better in the International markets than the domestic market. Nonetheless, Kantara: Chapter 1 is now the highest grossing Indian film of 2025 in both the domestic market as well as on the global scale. It would be interesting to see if any movie can cross this mark within the next two months of 2025.
