What is Kantara Chapter 1 all about?

Kantara Chapter 1’s story is set in the 4th century during the Kadamba reign and focuses on the tribals living in the mysterious and mystical forest Kantara. When a king attempts to stake claim to the bountiful land, the daivas guarding the forest get rid of him, but his young son flees and returns home, vowing never to return. As a grown up, king Rajashekara (Jayaram) steadfastly avoids all mentions of Kantara, but then his son, Kulashekara (Gulshan Devaiah) has other plans and lays siege on it, which ends in disastrous consequences.

What happens when Rajashekara’s true intentions are revealed and Berme (Rishab Shetty) becomes the chosen one for the daivas to possess and deliver their justice forms the crux of the film. Also on the cast are Rukmini Vasanth, Rakesh Poojary, Prakash Thuminad, Pramod Shetty, Naveen D Padil, Deepak Rai Panaje, Mime Ramadas, among others.

Kantara Chapter 1 is a much bigger film in terms of scale and visuals, but whether the story telling also matches the rooted beauty of the original is for audiences to decide. The film had opened to mixed reviews, given that it yet again depends on the high of the divine possession scenes to keep it afloat, with the rest of the tale remaining quite basic.

Despite that, the film has become the highest grossing Indian movie of 2025 and is projected to end its theatrical run just shy of the Rs 900 cr gross mark. It is currently at Rs 824 cr worldwide.
