For movie lovers, this week is happening, given that two star films have hit theatres. In Tamil, there is Idli Kadai, starring Dhanush, who has also written and directed the film, while fans of Kantara have its sequel (or actually the prequel) Kantara: Chapter 1, starring Rishab Shetty, who has also doubled up as director. With both films boasting a star ensemble, it looks like Kantara has taken over Idli Kadai with the ticket sales more than eight times that of the Dhanush film.
Idli Kadai debuted in theatres on October 1, while Kantara: Chapter 1 started its account with paid premieres on Wednesday followed by release the next day. As per the BookMyShow app, about 7.64K tickets of Idli Kadai have been sold in one hour, at the time of writing, while Kantara stands at a whopping 56.76K. This is easily eight times Idli Kadai’s bookings. Even as theatres in Tamil Nadu have been running shows for Idli Kadai, the film is easily bulldozed by Kantara, which boasts a big budget and the legacy of its first part, so naturally instigating more interest in the second part.

The streaming rights of both Kantara: Chapter 1 and Idli Kadai have been bagged by giant platforms, Prime Video and Netflix, respectively. While Kantara: Chapter 1 will premiere on October 30 on Prime Video, subscribers of OTTplay Premium can watch the film by upgrading their existing plans. Starring Gulshan Deviah, Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram and others, Kantara: Chapter 1 serves as a prequel to the first part and talks about the conflict between the forest folks and the ruling kingdom.
Meanwhile, Idli Kadai is expected to premiere sometime in last week of October on Netflix. Starring Nithya Menen, Rajkiran, Arun Vijay and others, it revolves around a man who returns to his village to carry on the legacy of his father’s humble idli eatery.
