Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol cemented themselves as one of the most iconic pairings in Bollywood, with their palpable chemistry and enviable dynamics in films such as Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge(1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai(1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham(2001). Among these, the latter two, directed by Karan Johar, in particular seem to hold a special place in viewers' hearts even today. Karan recently opened up about another Bollywood pairing whom he thought could rival that of SRK and Kajol’s.

In conversation with Rajeev Masand, as reported by Hindustan Times, Karan was questioned about whom he thought are the Shah Rukh and Kajol of the current generation. In response, the filmmaker said that viewers can see a similar kind of chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. The duo star in Karan’s upcoming directorial, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. The film marks their most recent on screen outing after Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy(2019).

The filmmaker went on to explain how their friendship was one of the biggest reasons for their delightful on screen chemistry. “That friendship results in chemistry”, said Karan.

On his strong bond with Alia, Karan said that he was well aware about the accusations about how he was partial towards the actress. He said he knew people accused him of always looking out for Alia as well. But the filmmaker said that given how talented Alia was, he considered it a privilege to do so.

Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani marks Karan’s first feature-length directorial after almost seven years, after 2016’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. In addition to Ranveer and Alia, the upcoming film also stars Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi in prominent roles. The film, produced under the banners of Dharma Productions and Viacom18 Studios, is slated for release next year.
