Karan Johar has been making headlines for Homebound, which has been shortlisted for Oscars 2026. Before that, the filmmaker produced a family drama Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani, which won the National Award. Seeing the trend, it appears that Karan has decided to move forward with another family drama. From what we hear, he might just be considering Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham sequel. Here’s everything we have learned so far…

Karan Johar is eyeing a massive family drama next. The filmmaker locked in the script on New Year, a source confirmed to Pinkvilla. “After hitting the bullseye with a romantic family comedy in the form of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Karan is returning to the family drama space with his next. Buzz is, it would be his biggest scale film till date, and Karan has brought in the New Year by locking the script of his next,” the birdie shared.
The source confirms it is a high-octane family drama with a strong romantic and emotional core, while also stating, “The film will be spearheaded by two male leads and two female leads, and the casting process is expected to kickstart soon. This will be the big-ticket marque from Dharma Productions scheduled for the theatrical medium.”

Given how KJo has been trying to revive the magic of the 90s and early 2000s, at least through titles (TMMTMTTM for Kartik Aaryan-Ananya Panday’s Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri), it wouldn’t be a surprise if the filmmaker considers going back to making movies like K3G (Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham) or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (K2H2). The source did mention in passing that the script which has been locked could potentially turn into K3G 2. "It's surely in the space of the 2001 blockbuster led by Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hritik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan," the source added. This movie is also most likely to bring Karan back as a film director.
