Karan Johar tends to often diss his directorial debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai now but he had faced that back when he was going behind the lens for the first time from his own parents. While Karan was narrating the script of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to his parents, his father, filmmaker Yash Johar, actually fell asleep. Karan’s mother Hiroo Johar asked him if he even knew where to place the camera when directing a scene. Karan made the revelation at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Karan’s savage mother
Karan shared that the morning when he had to go for first day of shoot, his mother woke him up at 5 am and asked him if he wants to back out of his debut and let Aditya Chopra, who had helmed Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, direct the film instead. “Abhi bhi der nahi hui hai,” she stressed and kept asking Karan if he was sure about going into direction. This haunted him in the first few seconds when he entered the sets and wondered where to place his camera. Eventually though, obviously, the filmmaker found his groove and directed one of India’s most loved movies with the iconic pairing of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.
An even more savage father
Celebrated filmmaker Yash Johar took it a step further and fell asleep while Karan was narrating the script to him. Karan recalls the conversation with a laugh like, “K: Papa aap so rahe ho? Y: Gaana aa gaya tha. K: Main gaa nahi raha tha.” Karan joked about the same because he is a self-confessed terrible singer. It is also a dig at all the jokes about Kuch Kuch Hota Hai songs and how long the tunes to them were (hear Tujhe Yaad Na Meri Aayi).
Karan Johar has completed 25 years as a director in movies. He had helmed Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani, featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles. The movie is among one of the most celebrated of the year. Apart from that, KJo has co-produced Kill, which he presented at TIFF.
