We may not be able to imagine anyone else playing Roopa in Laal Singh Chaddha now, but not many were aware that Aamir Khan and the team had not even considered Kareena Kapoor Khan to play the female lead in the film at first. Yes, in the recent episode of Karan Johar’s much-talked-about chat show Koffee With Karan, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan—who is both co-producing and playing the male lead in the movie—revealed that Kareena had to undergo a screen test for her role as she was not the team’s first choice.
Both the actors made a joint appearance on the show. In fact, as revealed by Aamir himself, they were contemplating hiring a younger actress for the part as the character’s age progression within the film ranges between 18 to 50 years. Aamir and Advait were made to watch an ad with the aim of getting a new actress on board for Roopa’s role.
Funnily, that same ad also featured Kareena and both the actor and director could not stop admiring her. Despite this intense moment between the makers, Kareena still had to go through a screen test.
Kareena, then, chimed in and explained how it was “obviously” the “first time when she had to take a screen test” in her over two-decade-long career and that it was her husband, actor Saif Ali Khan, who cajoled her into taking that test.
The actress further revealed that Saif thought it was “really cool” because only Aamir Khan could have asked someone like her to undergo a screen test for a character. He was “happy” and asked her to go for it.
“They brought a camera to my office. They made me enact a scene… I was like I have never done it in 22 years,” Kareena shared, gleefully. Staying true to her craft, Kareena even prepped for the scene in question and explained how being asked to take the test wasn’t an “ego” tussle for her but more of a “nervous” situation.
“… if I do it (referring to the screen test), it will be for Aamir. So I said, ‘listen, whatever it is, I am going to take the plunge’,” concluded the star.
Laal Singh Chaddha is the official Hindi remake of Tom Hanks’ Oscar-winning 1993 film Forrest Gump and is releasing in theatres on August 11, 2022.
