The discussion of hyper-masculinity films and romantic films is always at the top of the headlines. The box office has recently been dominated by the high-octane film Dhurandhar, and debates about whether mainstream cinema is veering toward excessive violence and gore. In response, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kalyani Priyadarshan discussed the growing dominance of hyper-masculine themes in today’s films amid the craze of Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Yash's Toxic.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, Kalyani Priyadarshan pointed out that audience preferences largely guide the film industry, shaping both content and casting, and insisted that trends aren’t only set by producers. Reacting to the hyper-masculinity films trend, Kalyani said, “Right now, I am going to call this a trend because I believe it's a trend and it's not going to last. But the trend has always been about spectacle. Every scene has to be sensational and shocking."

Kalyani suggested that the industry appears to believe that violence and sensationalism are what sell films. She clarified that, in her view, this is not currently true, but it seems to be the direction cinema is heading, which she finds worrying because it excludes short films and intimate emotional moments.

Agreeing with Kalyani, Kareena Kapoor Khan added, "Now it's all like thriller, crime, gore and blood and stuff. No fun, energy, colour, song, love or romance,” while admitting that she is not getting enough scripts with meatier roles for women."
Speaking about her work front, Kareena Kapoor Khan is set to star in Meghna Gulzar’s upcoming film Daayra, alongside Prithviraj Sukumaran.
The story explores the complex interplay of crime, justice, and morality, shedding light on how a single event can destroy multiple lives and question societal notions of guilt and responsibility. Kareena described the project as a “dream team” collaboration.
