It looks like the much-awaited sequel to Jigarthanda, an action comedy written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, is indeed happening. The director made the announcement on his social media page on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi and confirmed that Jigarthanda 2 is in the works. He wrote, "Happy Vinayagar Chathurthi 🪔🙏🏼 Pre Production from today... 😊 #JigarThanda2 Another Few Crimes & an Art... (sic)." He shared an image along with it, which looks like the script for the film, placed next to Lord Ganesha idol.
Though there has been a lot of buzz around Jigarthanda 2, there was no official confirmation on the same until yesterday. Now fans of Jigarthanda are excited about the new film. Jigarthanda 2 is likely to feature Bobby Simhaa who played the gangster, Assault Sethu in the original. The technical crew is said to be the same as Jigarthanda though there has been no announcement about the same.
Jigarthanda (2014) featured Siddharth, Lakshmi Menon, Karunakaran, Guru Somasundaram, Aadukalam Naren, Soundararaja, Ramachandran Durairaj, Sangili Murugan, Bala Singh, Delhi Ganesh, Bhagavathi Perumal to name a few. Cinematography is by Gavemic U Ary, editing is by Vivek Harshan and music by Santhosh Narayanan. The film was remade in Kannada with the same title, in Telugu as Gaddalakonda Ganesh and in Hindi as Bachchan Pandey. The film is said to be inspired by the South Korean film, A Dirty Carnival. The film was bankrolled by Kathiresan's Group.
Karthik Subbaraj's last release was Mahaan, which had a direct release on OTT on Amazon Prime Video. The action thriller had Vikram, Simran, Dhruv Vikram, Bobby Simhaa along with Aadukalam Naren, Deepak Paramesh, Vettai Muthukumar and Sanath. Mahaan had music by Santhosh Narayanan, cinematography by Shreyaas Krishna and editing by Vivek Harshan. The film had its television premiere on the occasion of Vinayagar Chaturthi (August 31).
