Kerala HC stays release of The Kerala Story 2; court to watch film

Director Kamakhya Narayan Singh’s sequel to the 2023 film The Kerala Story, The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond, was all set for release on February 27, 2026. However, the teaser and the trailer of the film that dropped in the run-up to the theatrical outing had sparked widespread backlash against the makers, especially from Kerala, what with people taking umbrage over the depiction of the state.
Following petitions seeking cancellation of The Kerala Story 2’s U/A censor certification, which clears its path for theatrical release, the High Court took note of the petitioners’ grievances and said that the apprehensions raised are probably genuine. The court stayed the release of the film until the petitions have been decided upon. This would include the court watching the film to take a final call on the petitions that have been filed against it.
Meanwhile, the Central government has come in support of the film stating that it does not threaten public order or show the southern state in a negative light. It added that creative freedom could not be curbed. The filmmakers have also maintained that the film does not target the state or its people , but only sought to highlight an evil that needs to be eradicated – love jihad and forced conversions of Hindu women to Islam.
Although the film is still called The Kerala Story 2, the storyline this time around does not have a direct link to the state, according to the makers. However, given that it is being promoted as a film based on true events, it is cause for concern, the court noted.
