Kerala State Film Awards 2023: Mammootty, Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam bag top awards

Malayalam superstar Mammootty and his critically acclaimed movie Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam received top honours at the prestigious Kerala State Film Awards. The coveted awards were announced by Minister of Culture Saji Cheriyan on Friday, celebrating the best of regional cinema.

Mammootty's stellar performance in Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam earned him the coveted title of 'Best Actor,' while the film itself claimed the top spot, winning the 'Best Film' award. Directed by the talented Lijo Jose Pellissery, the movie garnered widespread acclaim upon its release last year, captivating both critics and audiences alike.

Inspired by an old advertisement, the film carries a poignant note of thanks from the director before it begins, acknowledging the profound influence of the advertisement on the inception of the film. Screenwriter S. Hareesh played a pivotal role in elevating Lijo's idea to a new level, beautifully exploring the universality of human emotions through the narrative.

In the film, Mammootty portrays James, a Malayali man who embarks on a pilgrimage to Velankanni in Tamil Nadu with his family. A sudden nap during the trip triggers a surprising turn of events as he wakes up with the memories of a Tamilian man named Sundaram. The entwining of their lives leads to intriguing and heartwarming moments, witnessed with awe and curiosity by the entire village. However, the blind mother of Sundaram, senses her son in James, embraces him and spends the extra time she has with him without asking too many questions. The film masterfully captures the essence of emotions, deeply resonating with the audience.

Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam features a talented ensemble cast, including Ramya Suvi, Ramya Pandian, and Ashokan, who deliver captivating performances, enriching the overall cinematic experience. Besides playing the lead role, Mammootty had also bankrolled under his home production banner Mammootty Kampany.
