Kevin Costner’s Waterworld to get television sequel

A sequel to the 1995 post-apocalyptic film Waterworld is said to be in the works, reports Collider. The sequel will be developed as a TV series and the announcement comes over 25 years after the movie’s release.

The Kevin Costner starrer Waterworld is set in the year 2500 where the world is submerged in water after the complete melting of the polar ice cap. Costner plays the lead role of a lone drifter called ‘the Mariner’ who sails across the waterlogged terrains in his boat and ends up reluctantly helping a woman and a young girl. The movie was one of the most expensive movies made at the time and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound. However, its box office performance was disappointing.

The new series is said to follow the characters from the movie in a setting 20 years after the events that took place in it. The project is in the early stages of its development and the cast is yet to be announced.

John Davis, who served as a producer on the film, is said to be developing the series. Speaking to Collider, Davis has talked about how the original Waterworld has aged quite well, while also acknowledging the production problems it had. The producer has also confirmed that the series will be made available on a streaming platform, declining to reveal which one.

John Fox will also feature as producer along with Davis. Fox added that Universal Television is also attached to the project.

Filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg, known for the sci-fi thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane is reported to serve as a director. Trachtenberg is also reported to direct the latest instalment in the Predators franchise.
