Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam will be teaming up after a span of 35 years

On the eve of Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan's birthday (November 7), the actor threw a major surprise to his fans that absolutely came out of the blue. The Vikram actor announced that he was teaming up with Nayakan director Mani Ratnam after a span of 35 long years! The news sent the internet into a tizzy. The film, which is tentatively being referred to as KH234 will be bankrolled by Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Studios, Kamal Haasan's RajKamal Film International, and Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies.
Now in an interview, Udhayanidhi Stalin has revealed that only a three-line narration has been held for the film and that the story is yet to be locked. He also announced that the shoot for the film is likely to begin in mid-September in 2023. Music for the film is by AR Rahman and it will hit screens in 2024.
Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan had last teamed up for the cult gangster drama Nayakan (1987). The film was loosely based on the Mumbai-based gangster Varadarajan Mudaliar and marked the debut of Saranya and Karthik. The cast also included Janagaraj, Vijayan, MV Vasudev Rao, Delhi Ganesh, Nassar, Tinnu Anand and Nizhalgal Ravi to name a few. Cinematography was by PC Sreeram, editing by B Lenin and VT Vijayan and music by Ilaiyaraaja. The film turned out to be a milestone in both Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's career.
In the meantime, Kamal Haasan is currently filming for Shankar's vigilante action thriller Indian 2, which is a sequel to the 1996 film, Indian. Kamal Haasan will be reprising his iconic character Senapathy and a new poster was revealed on the occasion of his birthday by director Shankar. Kamal Haasan was last seen in the action thriller Vikram helmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, which also has Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil in prime roles.
