Malayalam filmmaker Jude Anthany Joseph’s 2018 – Everyone Is A Hero holds the distinction of being Mollywood’s highest grosser. The film is not just a retelling of the devastating floods that nearly destroyed most parts of Kerala in 2018, but more so about the flood of humanity within the state and from outside, as people cut across socio-economic-religious sections to help each other tide over the disaster. This tale of hope and resilience has so far grossed over Rs 160 crore world-wide.

Since its release, 2018 has got a lot of love from celebrities across the country, with the latest being namma Kannada superstar Kiccha Sudeep. He tweeted, “Humanity trumped (sic) during the 2018 floods in Kerala. This courageous true story is spectacularly clinched on the silver screen to become the biggest blockbuster in the history of the Kerala Film Industry. #2018EveryoneIsAHero is winning the hearts of Kannada audiences. Congrats.” Sudeep, however, did not indicate that he has seen the film, which has a massive ensemble cast, led by Tovino Thomas, and including Asif Ali, Narain, Lal, Kunchacko Boban, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Aparna Balamurali, Tanvi Ram, among others.

The film’s Malayalam version has managed to rake in over Rs 5 crore in Karnataka since its May 5 release, making it the highest grossing Mollywood movie in the state, followed by Lucifer, Kurup, Bheeshma Parvam and Pulimurugan. As of June 2, the Kannada dubbed version is also in theatres, albeit on a limited scale, given that the film is expected to drop on OTT on June 7. Sony LIV holds the digital rights of 2018 and is presenting the film in all its dubbed versions.

While the film’s collections have dipped in recent days, following its OTT premiere announcement, it is still going strong in theatres.
