Rarely do expectations meet reality and if there’s one actor, who has tried his best to keep a tight lid on the former in Malayalam, it’s got to be Dulquer Salmaan. So, when he does decide to go all out for his upcoming film King of Kotha, you can expect it to be a blast. The trailer of the movie, which was released by superstars Mohanlal, Shah Rukh Khan, Suriya and Nagarjuna, promises a gangster-actioner that is sure to set the box office on fire when it releases in theatres on August 24 in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi.

Here are some of the highlights from the recent trailer that has got us even more excited for the movie, which also has Aishwarya Lekshmi, Chemban Vinod Jose and Nyla Usha in pivotal roles.

The trailer starts with a character tracing Dulquer’s past, revealing his name – Raju – and hyping up the man’s personality, saying that he would tackle people head on and had a bravado that helped him rule the town of Kotha. The trailer revealed some stylish sequences that are sure to get the audience excited when they watch it in theatres along with Jakes Bejoy’s music that will further accentuate the ‘mass’ sequences.

Nimish Ravi’s visually-striking frames

Dulquer had said that the film is the most expensive one in his career. And when the star is also the filmmaker, you expect him to channel the money to where exactly it’s needed. The film is set in the 80s and 90s, and Nimish Ravi’s frames have an old-world charm to them. But that’s not all, it also showcases the massive scale at which the film is mounted – be it Western-setting of what seems like a bar-room brawl or the sequence meant to symbolise the ‘King of Kotha’ burning with rage. A particular frame at a coastal area also stands out, with it having a Biblical touch to it.

Replete with football references

If there’s one thing Malayalis love more than movies, it’s football, and the makers have ensured to embed the football-frenzied flavour of ‘80s in the movie. With Argentina jerseys, Diego Maradona graffiti and even a stylish scissor kick from Dulquer’s Raju, the film is also sure to get the blood pumping for the audience. And these references don’t feel like they are thrown in for the sake of upping the appeal, as you also get to see an action sequence unfolding, with the massive football field in the backdrop.

Dulquer Salmaan's several looks

With the movie set in two time periods, it was a given that the actor will be seen in multiple get-ups. The style icon of Mollywood seems to hav e aced the two looks that he will be seen extensively along with a younger version. His get-up with the slicked-back hair and stubble would be our pick for the best look from the trailer – probably because it’s also boosted by a sense of calm-but-menacing charisma that accompanies it.

Dulquer's signature gesture hints his romantic side too

King of Kotha is not all about action and gangsters, it’s also got some romance and stirring emotions. His signature style of folding his hands behind his head also hints at the two sides of his character. While in one, you see him with an aggressive countenance, in another you see a totally romantic side of him, while he does that. Like Shah Rukh Khan and Thalapathy Vijay, will Dulquer also make this his trademark gesture from now on?
