Although Will Smith was engulfed in controversy at this year’s Oscars, the actor ended the night as the Academy Award winner for Best Actor, thanks to his role in King Richard. The highly-acclaimed biographical sports drama is now set to start streaming digitally in India.
The movie is based on the life of Richard Williams, who is the father and coach of famed and celebrated Tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. Helmed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and written by Zach Baylin, the biopic follows the life of the two stars from their youth through the eyes of Richard, who was also their manager and mentor.
The movie premiered at the 48th Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2021 and had its theatrical release on November 19, 2021. King Richard received positive reviews all around, with its screenplay and the lead actor’s performance receiving a lot of praise.
The movie was also a contender at various award nights, receiving nominations at 94th Academy Awards (where Will Smith won Best Actor), 53rd NAACP Image Awards, 27th Critics' Choice Awards and the 79th Golden Globe Awards.
While Will Smith essays the life of Richard Williams, Saniyya Sidney plays Venus Williams and Demi Singleton plays Serena Williams. The movie also stars Aunjanue Ellis, Demi Singleton, Tony Goldwyn, Dylan McDermott , and Jon Bernthal in pivotal roles.
King Richard, which was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, is set to start streaming on Amazon Prime Video on April 22, 2022.
