Three months after its theatrical release, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is gearing up for its OTT debut. Wes Ball's science fiction action film will debut on Disney+ Hotstar on August 2, 2024. The movie is a stand-alone sequel to Josh Friedman's 2017 release, War for the Planet of the Apes. This is the ninth film in the Planet of the Apes reboot series, specifically the fourth instalment. Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, William H. Macy, and Owen Teague are the leading actors.
Set 300 years after the events of War, the film follows a young chimpanzee named Noa (Teague) and a lady named Mae (Allan) as they set out on a quest to decide the fate of all living things. Wes Ball breathes new life into the global epic saga, which unfolds in a future where apes peacefully coexist with humans, several generations after Caesar's rule. A young ape goes on a terrifying quest as a new cruel ape ruler establishes his empire. Along the way, he will question his past knowledge and make decisions that shape his species and humanity.
With a global total of almost $396 million, the film became the tenth highest-grossing picture of 2024, thanks to mostly positive reviews from critics.
Supposedly set to premiere in June 2022, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was to be the first of a planned trilogy of Planet of the Apes features from Disney and 20th Century. Wes Ball confirmed the news in December 2023, stating that the original plan was for the film to be the first in a trilogy, building upon the success of the first three.
The number of films in the Planet of the Apes reboot has reached nine, with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver expressing interest in creating a third trilogy.
You can stream the previous Planet of the Apes films Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) on Disney+ Hotstar.
