A festive release – that’s what Vijay Deverakonda’s latest, Kingdom, has got as it drops on OTT on the auspicious occasion of Ganesha Chaturthi. Directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, the spy action thriller, which also has Satyadev in the lead, hit theatres less than a month ago and is already OTT bound, after a not too stellar box office performance.

Industry trackers estimate that the film was woefully short of recovering its investment at the time it made its way to OTT. Kingdom’s streaming rights had been picked up by Netflix, which made the film available on August 27, with audio options in Telugu (original), Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi.
According to an official synopsis, the film follows Vijay as Suri, an undercover police constable, who is sent to Sri Lanka on a covert mission to dismantle a powerful syndicate, only to discover that its mastermind is his estranged brother Siva (Satyadev), forcing him to confront family loyalty, and the moral cost of duty.
An Anirudh Ravichander musical, Kingdom’s ensemble cast also includes Bhagyasri Borse, Venkitesh VP, Bhoomi Shetty, Manish Chaudhari, Ayyappa P Sharma, Goparaju Ramana, Rohini, Muralidhar Goud, Baburaj, Mahesh Achanta, Rajkumar Kasireddy, among others.

Kingdom was a film that Vijay Deverakonda had pinned a lot of hope on, given that his last few movies have not worked at the box office. The mixed reviews from critics and audiences apart, Kingdom also ran into trouble when a controversy broke out about the film’s depiction of Sri Lankan Tamilians. Their portrayal as antagonists and violent criminals did not sit well with them, sparking demonstrations and calls for the film to be banned.
Said to have been made at a budget of around Rs 130 cr, the film ended its theatrical run with a net worldwide collection of Rs 82 crore only. Released as a Telugu-Tamil bilingual, Kingdom did not work in the Tamil version. Reports suggest that the makers managed to recover costs with the OTT deal, with Netflix said to have paid a whopping Rs 51 cr for the rights of Kingdom.
