2023 was a great year not just for Bollywood but also for film industries based in south India. Movies namely Pathaan and Tiger 3, which were produced under the banner of Yash Raj Films (YRF), emerged to be great theatrical successes. Not only this, but regional films namely Jailer, Leo, and Ponniyin Selvan 2 turned out to be great theatrical successes too. Speaking on the development, popular Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji recently addressed a gathering in Mumbai for a FICCI event. Here is what she said about the business of Indian cinema.

Rani Mukerji - South Indian filmmakers listen to what audiences want

When it comes to knowing about the business and growth of Indian cinema, we know that Rani Mukerji’s views matter. Not only is she a noted actress, but also the wife of reputed film producer Aditya Chopra – the Chairman of Yash Raj Films.

Recently, Rani addressed a gathering in Mumbai where she expressed her views on the rise of box-office collections of films, especially those created by filmmakers based in the south of India. Expressing her views on the development, Rani first lauded superstar Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Pathaan – which significantly helped ‘theatres turn into stadiums’. Pathaan minted over a thousand crore rupees at the box office globally.

Later, as she proceeded with the talk, Rani outlined how filmmakers down South cater to the needs of the audiences. She said, “They (filmmakers in south India) listen to what the audiences want. When cinema is evolving and everybody’s trying to cater to a diverse audience, sometimes you lose touch with the popular or the massive want of an audience to see simple storytelling, as opposed to storytelling, which is more diverse or more evolved and more for a certain section of audiences.”

Rani further lauded the simplicity of filmmakers established in the south of India and that they are connecting with the people via simple storytelling – which is one of the major factors why films touch the hearts of people.

Meanwhile, it can be confidently said that Rani has resumed her professional work just 3 days after returning from the Jamnagar event which marked the union of billionaires Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant.
