Kerala already has the highest number of regional OTT platforms and while the content on some isn’t of the greatest quality, each of these streaming services has been making efforts to acquire films with leading actors to showcase on their platform. Director TK Rajeev Kumar’s Kolaambi is one such movie that is all set to get a direct-to-OTT release this week.
The movie, which has Nithya Menen, Siddharth Menon, Vijay Yesudas, Renji Panicker and Rohini as part of the cast, was shot almost three years ago during the Kochi-Muziris Biennale of 2018. Nithya, who had earlier collaborated with Rajeev Kumar for Thalsamayam Oru Pennkutty, worked with him for the second time for this film.
What is the story of Kolaambi?
True to its title, the movie is sound-centric. Nithya plays an artist who flies down to Kochi to install one of her works as part of the Biennale. Renji Panicker and Rohini play a couple eke out a living by renting out loudspeakers but their livelihood is threatened when new rules regulating its use come into force. The elder duo then become an inspiration for the artist’s work, and the movie revolves around the relationship between the duo and Nithya’s character.
Music is a vital part of the film and the movie also has Vijay Yesudas playing a cameo as himself. He reportedly approaches the elder couple for the first microphone that was used by his legendary father and musician KJ Yesudas.
Academy Award-winner Resul Pookutty and cinematographer Ravi Varma are part of the crew of the film, which premiered at the Indian Panorama at the International Film Festival of India.
Where can you watch Kolaambi?
The movie, which also has Manju Pillai and Dileesh Pothan and Baiju Santhosh, is set to release on a new OTT platform named MTALKIE on December 24, 2021. The makers had mulled a theatrical release but settled to stream the film on an OTT platform as several big Malayalam movies are still awaiting release.
