Director Jeethu Joseph’s investigative thriller Kooman has finally dropped on OTT. The movie, which marks the director’s first collaboration with Asif Ali, also worked well for the actor as it became his highest-grossing film in 2022.
The movie, which is set in a rural backdrop, has Asif essaying the role of a police constable named Giri. Scripted by 12th Man writer Krishnakumar, the movie revolves around a series of incidents that happen in a village in Kerala-Tamil Nadu border that turn the lives of its new sub inspector and the villagers topsy turvy. Giri, who is a brilliant investigator but lets his ego interfere with the matters, has a bigger role to play in not just solving these crimes.
The film, which also has Renji Panicker, Hannah Reji Koshy, Baburaj and Deepak Parambol, hit theatres in the first week of November. It has now begun streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
In a press statement from the platform, Asif said that working with the Drishyam director was gratifying as he has the knack of “envisioning his characters with a layered screenplay”. The actor, who is currently shooting for Mridhul Nair’s Kasaragold, said that his character of constable Giri was challenging, but it’s also roles like these that are the reason he is in this profession and artform.
Jeethu, who is currently shooting for his big budget action-thriller Ram starring Mohanlal, Trisha Krishnan and Indrajith Sukumaran in Morocco, said that globally, the audience are now preferring to watch suspense-filled action thrillers and Kooman is his way of delivering “a gritty, vengeful thriller that will leave everyone with a rewarding experience”.
Kooman also marked Jeethu's first theatre release in Malayalam since the pandemic. Amazon Prime Video had also released the director’s debut OTT film Drishyam 2 on its platform back in February. During the promotions of Kooman, the director had confirmed that there are plans for Drishyam 3.
