Kannada actor Darling Krishna had a lot riding on his latest film Kousalya Supraja Rama. The actor-filmmaker had not had a hit to his credit in the last few years, barring, of course, his own directorial ventures Love Mocktail 1 & 2. Krishna’s decision to only work on rom-coms back-fired, with audiences panning his repetitive roles and frequent pairing with his wife, Milana Nagaraj. In fact, for the longest time, the team of Kousalya Supraja Rama also kept Milana’s casting in the film a secret, with director Shashank later explaining that the only reason he got her on board was because the role required an actor of her calibre.

Kousalya Supraja Rama, though, struck a chord with Kannada audiences, as it explored a topic that’s rarely ever addressed – male chauvinism. Krishna played Rama, whose very chauvinistic father Siddegowda (Rangayana Raghu) brings him up with the same core values – that a woman is meant to be at the beck-and-call of a man and not have a voice/opinion of her own. This attitude ruins Rama’s relationship with Shivani (Brinda Acharya), after which he marries Muthulakshmi (Milana Nagaraj), who gives him a taste of his own medicine.

The film, jointly produced by Shashank and BC Patil, managed a successful 50-day run at the box office, during which time it was reported that the satellite rights had been picked up by Zee Network. It was, therefore, assumed that Zee5 Kannada would get the digital rights too. But looks like all those reports were misplaced. A little while ago, on the occasion of Kousalya Supraja Rama’s 50th day celebrations, Shashank announced that it would begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video at the stroke of midnight.

This means that Kannada audiences are in for a treat this week as far as OTT releases are concerned. Zee5 Kannada has the hit campus comedy Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare dropping on September 15 and now Kousalya Supraja Rama is also available, but on Prime Video.
