Kannada cinema’s Challenging Star Darshan’s Kranti was the first big-ticket release of 2023 and one of the most widely anticipated ones. The film, directed by composer V Harikrishna, and produced by Shylaja Nag and B Suresha for Media House Studio, was kickstarted as a pan-India film, but closer to the release, the makers pushed it as a Kannada film only, with the dubbed versions – in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi to either get limited theatrical outings or an OTT release only. This was because Darshan would not promote the film anywhere outside of Karnataka and insisted on pushing it as a Kannada film meant for his fans only.

The film had Darshan in the title role, an NRI returning home to help save his alma mater, which is under threat of closure owing to rampant privatization of government-run schools. The film received mixed reviews and while some trade trackers claimed that the film wasn’t doing well at the box office, the team celebrated with a cake bearing Rs 109 crore on it to mark its success. The figure was, reportedly, the sum of its box office and non-theatrical revenues.

Amazon Prime Video had picked up the streaming rights of the film prior to its release, and it was believed that Kranti would drop after the 30-day mark. But today, the streamer announced that it was making it available even earlier. Kranti will drop on Amazon Prime Video on February 23 in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. The Hindi version, it seems, is being sold elsewhere.

The film was Darshan’s second collaboration with the team and reunited him with Rachita Ram, who debuted nearly a decade ago with Bulbul opposite the Challenging Star. They also worked together in Ambareesha. The film also stars Tarun Arora, P Ravi Shankar, Mutant Raghu, Giri Shivanna, Samyukta Hornad, Girija Lokesh, V Ravichandran, Umashree, among others.
