In 2017, KRG Studios was launched by Karthik Gowda, executive producer with Hombale Films, as a film distribution firm. He was later joined by stylist and filmmaker Yogi G Raj and the duo has been at the forefront of distributing Kannada cinema since then.

KRG Studios ventured into film production with the 2021 Rohit Padaki directorial Rathnan Prapancha, which had Daali Dhananjaya in the lead. Amid the pandemic, the film skipped a theatrical release and went straight to OTT on Amazon Prime Video. Their second production is currently in production and is also with Dhananjaya. Called Hoysala, the thriller directed by Vijay N is set in Belagavi, and has the actor play a cop.

Today, KRG Studios announced its third production, for which, they are collaborating yet again with Rathnan Prapancha maker Rohit. Called Uttarakaanda, the film has the tagline – The Mega tale of the Gangsters from the Lands of the North – and will go on floors in January 2023. The announcement was warmly received, with fans thrilled that more films set in North Karnataka are being made by mainstream Kannada filmmakers. Interestingly, Rohit’s earlier film, Rathnan Prapancha too had a major portion based in north Karnataka, featuring Pramod and Shruthi.

Following the announcement, there was also speculation about who would headline the project. Considering that Dhananjaya is already on his second film with the production wing, his name has emerged as the hot favourite, but there is a section that believes that Rohit’s film will have Century Star Shiva Rajkumar in the lead. Who better than Shivanna to play a gangster, right? But then Dhananjaya was the first to wish the team, so maybe he isn’t in it. Guess we will have to wait for the next announcement to find out who will headline Uttarakaanda, which will have music by Tagaru hitmaker Charan Raj.
