The Empire web series opened to highly positive reviews. The series that was released on August 27, intended to be “The Baahubali” in the web series catalogue. It chronicles the fictionalized biography of Mughal emperor Babur, who is responsible for many administrative as well as economic reforms. The series also attracted viewers with its ‘Bhansali’ type storytelling and grand sets.
The actor Kunal Kapoor who plays the role of Babur said to Pinkvilla, “I am really overwhelmed by the kind of response that I have got since the release of The Empire. It was a beautifully written book with some fascinating characters and we have all worked very hard to make it come alive.” The actor also expressed his gratitude for his fans who stood by him even in the trying times.
The eight-episode series begins with the ascension of the fourteen-year-old Babur as the ruler of Ferghana. Apart from Kunal Kapoor, the series also boasts of powerful performances by its star-studded cast that include Shabana Azmi, Drashti Dhami and Dino Morea. Shabana Azmi plays the role of Babur’s grandmother Esan Daulat. The actress has defined her character as highly manipulative and scheming and called her a “king-maker”. Dhrashti Dhami appears as Khanzada, Babur’s fearless sister and his main tactician, and Dino Morea plays the role of Shaibani Khan, a rival and ruthless emperor who has eyes on Babur’s kingdom.
The series is based on Alex Rutherford's Empire of the Moghul: Raiders from the North. The novel is highly fictionalised and is a creative version of the exploits and adventures of the Mughal empire. The series is created by Nikkhil Advani and is directed by debutante Mitakshara Kumar.
