Kurukshetra is an ambitious animated series that brings the ancient Indian epic the Mahabharata and debuted with an official trailer on Netflix. In its upcoming October 10 premiere, the show promises a visually stunning, modern story that explores the deep emotional and moral complexity of the 18-day "Dharmayuddh" (battle of righteousness).

Battlefield intensity

Immerse yourself in the combat in this two-and-a-half-minute trailer that showcases high-quality, dramatic animation that conveys the enormity and intensity of the battlefield vividly. The visual effects depicting the usage of divine weapons, or astras, set the dramatic tone for the sequences that feature archery, mace duels, and spear warfare. The graphics create an intense and thrilling environment by using a vibrant colour scheme with blazing oranges, blues, and deep shadows.

Importantly, the trailer goes deeper than just showing off to emphasise the protagonist's inner struggles. Arjuna, Draupadi, and Duryodhana are among the important characters whose close-ups show a spectrum of emotions, from anguish and resoluteness to an insatiable hunger for power. At a pivotal moment, we witness Lord Krishna instructing an injured Arjuna. A glimpse of Krishna's ethereal, cosmic form, Vishwaroop, highlights the story's philosophical and moral underpinnings. As a further graphic representation of the sacrifices made by both sides in the conflict, an arrow-riddled figure—Bhishma Pitamah—stands forth.

Perspective of 18 warriors

In contrast to other epics, this one delves deeply into the personal struggles and fates of its 18 main soldiers, viewing the conflict not through a simplistic good-vs-evil prism but through their own unique perspectives. Lord Krishna says in the series, "Iss yuddh mein na koi mitra hai, na koi shatru" (This war has no friends or enemies), and the trailer tries to make that point through its thorough character studies.

Kurukshetra is written and directed by Ujaan Ganguly, and it was conceptualised and constructed by Anu Sikka. Legendary poet Gulzar lends his lyrical talent to the production, which Hitech Animation has brought to life, giving the series a poetic depth and an emotional punch.
