The wait for Kurup’s release is almost over! After teasing the audience for almost two years, the makers are finally set to release the Dulquer Salmaan-starrer which revolves around the life of Kerala’s most wanted fugitive Sukumara Kurup.
Directed by Srinath Rajendran, the movie has a stellar cast featuring Dulquer in the lead along with Sobhita Dhulipala, Indrajith Sukumaran, Shine Tom Chacko, Sunny Wayne and Shivajith Padmanabhan in pivotal roles.
What is Kurup about?
The film is inspired by the life of Sukumara Kurup and spans from the late 60s to the 80s. Kurup along with his accomplices had murdered a film representative named Chacko in January 1984 and burned the car along with the body to claim insurance money. While Kurup’s brother-in-law Bhaskara Pillai and driver Ponnappan were caught by the police, Kurup absconded, sending the police on a wild goose chase across the country as well as abroad where he had worked for a few years. The movie will showcase Kurup’s years in Kerala, Mumbai and the UAE leading up to the murder of Chacko.
Where was Kurup shot?
Made on a budget of Rs 35 Crore, the film was shot in Kerala, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Mysore and Dubai over 110 days. The movie is one of the biggest in Dulquer’s career. As the film’s story is set in different time periods, the technical team had spent massive amount of time for research and references to ensure that each period detail is accurate.
When is Kurup releasing?
Kurup, which was rumoured to be a direct-to-OTT release after the pandemic, is set to hit theatres across the world on November 12. The movie will be shown in 400 screens in Kerala, making it the biggest release since the pandemic in the State.
According to the rules of Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce, a movie that has been released in cinema halls can opt for its OTT release only 42 days after its theatrical release. This would mean that Kurup can be expected to hit streaming services any day after December 24, queuing it for Christmas or New Year release on a digital platform. The OTT release date, however, is yet to be announced.
