If the trailer of Srinath Rajendran’s Dulquer Salmaan-starrer Kurup is anything to go by, it’s no surprise why theatre exhibitors have lobbied hard to release the movie in theatres. Packed with romance, mystery and intense performances from its cast, whatever glimpses from the film that the makers have revealed has enough to draw the audience, especially the youth, back to the theatres.
The trailer starts off with a call to the office of Indrajith's police officer Krishnadas, who is investigating Kurup's case. The caller reveals himself to be Kurup. Then the video shows cuts of Kurup's past - from his days in the Indian Air Force where he trains with Sunny Wayne's character but isn't liked by his superiors. We also get to see a bit of his romance with Sobhita Dhulipala's character Sarasamma as well as his days in the Middle East, before Kurup tells his friends that he is scheming to claim his life insurance from the Gulf.
In between, the audience also sees the several guises that Kurup takes over the years before the kills Chacko in 1984 and while he is absconding from the cops. The shocking scene comes in the end when Kurup tells his brother-in-law played by Shine Tom Chacko, that he will burn the face inside the house and the body later at some other place.
In an exclusive interview with OTTplay, Srinath had told us that the movie was a “dream project” he first conceived in 2021 right after he and Dulquer had completed their debut film Second Show. However, back then they didn’t have the star power to make a massive project like Kurup.
But the wait surely seems to be worth it – for the team of Kurup as well as the audience. Spanning from the late 60s to the 80s, the team’s attention to details in bringing back the time period is surely one of the highlights of the film. The film’s cinematography is by Nimish Ravi, who had earlier worked in Luca.
Srinath told us, “I believe everyone’s life is a movie, but the story of Kurup is set in a beautiful time period. The 70s are awesome and the 80s are great on a whole different level. To tell a mystery in such an alluring time period itself makes it stand apart from any movie we have watched. So, part of the movie is taking the audience through that journey. What little we know about Kurup’s life itself is fascinating, so what I understood is that if we go in depth, it just becomes all the more enthralling.”
Apart from Dulquer in the titular role, the film also has Indrajith Sukumaran as a cop, Sobhita Dhulipala, Sunny Wayne, Shine Tom Chacko and Shivajith Padmanabhan. The film’s music is Sushin Shyam, who had composed for Varathan and Kumbalangi Nights.
The movie is set to hit theatres across the world on November 12. Kurup will release in 400 theatres in Kerala and is the biggest film to hit the cinema halls in the State since the pandemic.
