It seems with Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Kuruthi, which opened on Amazon Prime Video today, Malayalam cinema has scored another hit on OTT. The socio-political thriller, which revolves around members of two families, is directed by Manu Warrier and scripted by Anish Pallyal.
The film was Amazon Prime Video’s first Onam release on the platform this year and like most of the Malayalam films this year, it was much anticipated not just by the Malayali audience but also those across the country. Fans, who had watched the movie on the OTT platform, began sharing their reviews, lauding what they liked and stating what they didn’t. Here’s a round up of some of the reviews from Twitter:
The audience were also pleased with how the film tackled the subject of hatred through its characters, Ibrahim, a God-fearing rubber tapper, and Laiq, a ruthless man seeking vengeance for the death of his father. The movie has Prithviraj, Roshan Mathew, Srinda, Naslen, Mamukkoya, Shine Tom Chacko, Sagar Surya, Navas Valikkunnu and Murali Gopy playing pivotal roles.
While Kuruthi was buoyed by stellar performances from all cast members, there was little doubt among most fans as to who stood out. Veteran actor Mammukoya, who played Ibrahim’s daredevil father Moosa, was the “superstar” for most of the audience, with the movie’s best lines.
The film has music by Jakes Bejoy and the cinematography is by Abhinandhan Ramanujam. Kuruthi was shot at a break-neck speed of just over a month in the past December. Kuruthi is Prithviraj’s second film to get a direct-to-OTT release after Cold Case in June.
The movie is also co-produced by the actor and Supriya Menon under the banner Prithviraj Productions. It’s the third film from the company after 9 and Driving License.
