L2 Empuraan box office collection day 4: Following right-wing objections to certain scenes, the filmmakers made 17 modifications, with Mohanlal expressing regret for any offense caused

L2 Empuraan the recently released Malayalam film starring actor Mohanlal in the lead role, has collected Rs 59 crore at the domestic box office during its four days of theatrical run in all languages, so far. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran who also stars in the film, Empuraan is the highest grossing Malayalam film so far in 2025.
L2 Empuraan, the much-anticipated second instalment from Lucifer tri logy, finally hit big screens on Thursday, March 27. The film stars Mohanlal in the lead role, who reunited with Prithviraj as director once again. At the domestic box office, Empuraan has collected Rs 59 crore, including all languages, as per Sacnilk report. The Mohanlal-Prithviraj film has been seeing a positive occupancy rate across cities, as it goes on to become the highest grossing Malayalam film this year.
It is to be noted that Empuraan has already become the fastest Malayalam film to gross Rs 100 crore globally, by beating Manjummel Boys (Rs 73.5 crore) to become the highest Malayalam grosser ever outside India with Rs 140 crore already in three days. With the Eid weekend not yet over, the film is expected to see more occupancy and turnout ratio, further contributing to the film’s financial success.
Upon the release of Empuraan, certain right-wing groups raised objections to a few riot scenes shown in the film. Subsequently, the makers had 17 modifications made on the film.
After Empuraan hit theatres, right-wing activists pointed out scenes which drew similarities to the 2002 Gujarat riots. Mohanlal, through a social media post, extended his regret if the film had offended anyone's sentiments and added that as an artiste, it is his duty that his films do not offend any political institution. He also pointed that the sequences will be modified in the film.
