Actor Mohanlal once again joined hands with director Prithviraj Sukumaran for the second instalment of the Lucifer trilogy. The film hit theatres on March 27, and opened to mixed reviews upon its release. However, it has been steady at the box office, and became the fastest to collect Rs 200 crore worldwide within five days.
As per Sacnilk report, Empuraan has collected Rs 68 crore at the domestic box office, including all languages. The film has gone to become the highest grossing Malayalam film so far in 2025, beating Rekhachithram and Officer On Duty. The long Eid weekend has helped the Mohanlal-starrer to become a commercially successful film.
It is to be noted that Empuraan has already become the fastest Malayalam film to gross Rs 100 crore globally, by beating Manjummel Boys (Rs 73.5 crore) to become the highest Malayalam grosser ever outside India with Rs 140 crore already in three days.
Empuraan is going strong despite the film courting controversy. Upon its release, right-wing groups pointed out portions from the film which portrayed Gujarat riots. Embroiled in political debate, the makers of Empuraan made 17 modifications to the film, with the new version to hit soon. Mohanlal also extended his apology with regards to the same.
Starring Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Suraj Venjaramoodu and others, the film is written by Murali Gopi. It was jointly backed by Antony Perumbavoor, Subaskaran Allirajah, and Gokulam Gopalan under Aashirvad Cinemas, Lyca Productions, and Sree Gokulam Movies respectively.
