The second instalment in the Lucifer trilogy, L2 Empuraan, the 2025 Malayalam film debuted in theatres a week ago. The film, starring Mohanlal in the lead role, has minted Rs 83.75 crore at the box office in domestic network, as per reports. This includes all languages.

Mohanlal returned to play the protagonist in the second instalment of the Lucifer trilogy, L2 Empuraan. Directed by actor-filmmaker Prithviraj in his third directorial who also starred in the film, L2 Empuraan is an action thriller penned by Murali Gopi.
The film hit theatres a week ago, and has collected Rs 83.75 crore so far in all languages in the domestic box office, as per Sacnilk report. With L2 Empuraan capitalising on the long Eid weekend, the film's major share of earnings come from the Malayalam version. However there has been a dip in the collection since Tuesday. Nevertheless, L2 Empuraan is still Malayalam’s highest grossing film so far in 2025, beating crime thrillers Officer on Duty and Rekhachitram.
L2 Empuraan had been caught in controversy ever since its release, with certain right-wing groups calling out the film for the alleged depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots. Following this, the makers did "voluntary modifications" to the film. Some of the changes include BJP leader Suresh Gopi's name removed from thanks card, word NIA being muted, visuals of vehicles passing in front of religious structures and a religious structure being removed. All these are part of the 24 changes done by the makers.
No IMAX screenings for L2 Empuraan anymore
Empuraan was announced as the first ever Malayalam film to release on IMAX. But now, that has been put to end, given the re-edited version will be causing Empuraan makers to stall the IMAX screenings. This is because of the cuts and modifications, leading to re-edited version causing heavy expenditure to be uploaded once again in the format.
