Following up with the 2019 political action thriller film Lucifer, Prithviraj and Mohanlal once again reunited for the second instalment in the trilogy, titled L2 Empuraan. The film released in March in theatres and went on to become one of the highest-grossing films in Malayalam so far this year.
Now, the film is set to make its streaming debut. Empuraan’s post-theatrical streaming rights have been bagged by JioHotstar. The streaming will begin from April 24 in major south languages, JioHotstar announced on social media on Thursday.
Written by Murali Gopi and directed by actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, Empuraan had courted controversy after its release. The Mohanlal-Prithviraj film faced backlash from right-wing groups for certain portions in the film which depicted riots akin to the Gujarat riots in 2002. Following the backlash, the makers made some modifications, and Mohanlal even put out a long post apologising for the same. The changes made in the film resulted in an end to the IMAX screenings, due to the cost involved in uploading the new version.
Empuraan features a star ensemble, including actors Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Pranav Mohanlal, and others.
Mohanlal, who has aced every genre in his illustrious career so far, has some of his best classics streaming on SunNXT and OTTplay Premium. Some of them include the Priyadarshan-directorial Kaalapani starring Prabhu Tabu, Amrish Puri and others, Pakshe with Shobhana, and action thriller film Maanthrikam .
