Aamir Khan launched the first song 'Kahani' from his upcoming Laal Singh Chaddha today. The soft and soulful track is composed by Pritam with vocals by Mohan Kannan and lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya.

'Kahani' cuts through the clutter of remixes and electronic-heavy songs that are currently trendy in Hindi film music. While they are forgettable and have a very brief shelf life, one cannot say the same for 'Kahani.' It will be remembered just like many songs that Aamir's other movies like Taare Zameen Par, Dil Chahta Hai and Ghajini have given us.

A press release says that 'Kahani' "beautifully encapsulates the movie and in essence introduces the audiences to the film," which only increases the curiosity around Laal Singh Chaddha's trailer.

The release further points out that Aamir chose to go for a song release before a trailer to "highlight not just the music industry at large and their endeavours but also allow audiences to enjoy these tracks unadulterated by the visuals and in their true essence." It's not a brave move, but certainly a refreshing promotional idea.

In a statement, Aamir said that he believes the music of Laal Singh Chaddha is its "soul" and said that the album has some of his career's best songs. "It was a very intentional decision to put Pritam, Amitabh, the singers and technicians in the spotlight because not only do they deserve to be center stage but also the music deserves its due credit," he added.

Laal Singh Chaddha is the official Hindi adaptation of Tom Hanks's 1994 drama Forrest Gump, which went on to win six Oscars. Its soundtrack was also popular and sold over 12 million copies, according to Business Insider. With actor-writer Atul Kulkarni adapting Eric Roth's screenplay in Hindi, and a team of masters attached to the project, the expectation from Laal Singh Chaddha is high.

The movie, directed by Advait Chandan, also stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh and Chaitanya Akkineni.

Laal Singh Chaddha releases on August 11 in cinemas.
