Laila, Vishwak Sen's latest film, hit the screens on February 14, 2025, as a Valentine's Day special. The film opened with decent buzz, primarily due to the off-screen controversies that kept it in the headlines. However, poor word of mouth led to its downfall, with Laila receiving harsh criticism from the first show itself.
As previously reported by OTTplay, Laila collected Rs 1.4 crore on its opening day—the lowest for a Vishwak Sen film in recent years. Unfortunately, things worsened on day two, with collections plummeting below Rs 1 crore. According to the latest updates, Laila earned only Rs 50 lakh on its second day, barely pushing its total past the Rs 2 crore mark.
Adding to its woes, the film has already been pulled from several theaters and is expected to end its theatrical run by this weekend. Directed by Ram Narayan, Laila has been widely criticized for its poor narration and crude humor, drawing backlash from both critics and audiences. Scenes from the film have surfaced on social media, where Vishwak Sen is being trolled for choosing such a poorly received project. His portrayal of a female character, intended for comedic effect, has also faced severe criticism.
Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video has secured the film’s digital rights, and reports suggest it will premiere on OTT within three weeks of its theatrical release. The film’s poor performance is expected to result in significant losses for the makers. While Vishwak Sen was paid a decent fee for his role, he has borne the brunt of the backlash.
Adding to the controversy, a speech by 30 Years Prithvi, criticizing the YCP government, stirred political tensions just before the film’s release, leading to the trending hashtag #BoycottLaila. However, despite these external factors, the film's failure is largely attributed to its poor content. It remains to be seen when Laila will officially arrive on OTT. Stay tuned for more updates on this project.
