Landlord was Kannada actor Duniya Vijay’s first release as a leading man, since his 2024 directorial Bheema (he had an extended cameo in 2025’s Marutha). The film, written and directed by Jadeshaa K Hampi hit theatres on January 23, 2026 and reported severely sluggish bookings on Day 1. According to trackers, the film’s day 1 net was around Rs 0.52 cr only, which got slightly better by Day 2 at Rs 0.64 cr and then Rs 0.9 cr by the first Sunday. The film benefited from the first Monday also being a holiday and added a further Rs 1.04 cr to its tally, taking the grand total to Rs 3.1 cr net.
Although there was an improvement in footfalls and collections, the opening Landlord had was far from what Vijay’s own directorials, Salaga and then Bheema managed. Salaga, which was headed to a clash with Sudeep’s Kotigobba 3 on release day, but had a solo release for a day, as the latter had some monetary issues, raked in Rs 4.8 cr on Day 1. Bheema, which came out at a time when Kannada cinema was going through a massive slump and was the first to bring audiences back to theatres, came in at a slightly lower Rs 3.95 cr on its first day in theatres.

In fact, when bookings opened for Landlord, the lack of interest among audiences had triggered comments that Vijay’s fan base prefers his brand of underworld cinema and was not interested in a period film about oppression and the rights of farmers. More importantly, since the first poster, netizens have been drawing comparisons between Landlord and Darshan Thoogudeepa’s Kaatera , which credits Jadeshaa as co-writer. In fact, Landlord does have a strong Kaatera vibe, which the filmmaker does not deny, but has stated that the similarity in the genre apart, both films are vastly different.
Landlord also features Raj B Shetty as the main antagonist, while Rachita Ram, Rithanya Vijay, Shishir Baikady, Gopalkrishna Deshpande, Bhaavanaa Raaoh, Umashree, Avinash, Sharath Lohithashwa, Rakesh Adiga, Abhi Dass, Jahangir, among many others were also on the cast.
