Landlord, the latest Duniya Vijay starrer in theatres is struggling at the box office and it’s not even been a week since its release. The film, directed by Jadeshaa K Hampi, had a slow start on Day 1, but then, over the extended weekend, including the holiday on Monday, footfalls had risen, only for it to fall again on the first working day. On Day 5, Tuesday, Landlord registered its lowest box office figures yet, with a net of Rs 40 lakh only, taking the total so far to Rs 3.5 cr (net) only. This is even lower than the film’s reported Rs 52 lakh net collection on Day 1.

In the run-up to the film’s release, netizens had reckoned that Vijay fans would not be interested in Jadeshaa’s brand of cinema and prefer the actor-filmmaker’s underworld stories instead. The response to Landlord is affirmation of this theory. The film team has, in the meantime, tried other promotional strategies, like holding special shows for rights activists and school children, besides seeking the support of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, among others.
Some netizens state that team Landlord is failing because of the left ideology promotional approach, while others say that it is because the film is way too similar to Darshan Thoogudeepa’s Kaatera, which Jadeshaa had co-written. While Kaatera was about the land reform act of the 70s, the exploitative feudal nature of those times was not what was highlighted. Instead, it was about Darshan leading a content heavy subject with the right dose of commercial elements.

The team has not publicly revealed the film’s budget, but it is rumoured to be in the Rs 8-10 cr slab, including the remunerations of Vijay, Raj B Shetty and Rachita Ram. At the time of the release, the film’s satellite and digital rights had not been sold, but it is expected to go through shortly.
