Four Walls & Two Nighties and Sold are the latest additions on OTT

Kannada films may not be high up on the list for streaming platforms, but they are slowly and steadily making their presence felt in the OTT space. While a majority of films get a digital release only after a theatrical outing, this year, two films have come directly on OTT, namely, One Cut Two Cut and Family Pack, with Man of the Match expected to join this list soon. 

Here’s a look at the most recent Kannada film additions to OTT platforms.

Four Walls & Two Nighties

Veteran actor Achyuth Kumar's first film as a leading man has him playing a single father to four grown-up children and explores the relationship dynamics he has with them, especially since he keeps his three daughters safely guarded in the confines of his home.  

Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video since May 3, 2022

Sold

Director Prerana Agarwal's debut film follows a reporter's investigation into the abduction of a friend's child, aided by the police, who are looking at busting a human trafficking ring. The film has Kavya Shetty, Danish Sait, Deepam Kohli in pivotal roles.

James

The late Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar's last commercial film, James, found its way to OTT, while it was still playing in select theatres. The film, which was released with Shivarajkumar's voice for Puneeth's character, was later remastered and re-released with the Power Star's voice.

Ek Love Ya

Director Prem's film was the launchpad of his wife Rakshitha's brother, Raanna. The film also introduced heroine Reeshma Nanaiah to Kannada cinema and was a revenge drama.

Sakath

Golden Star Ganesh's second film with Suni released way back in November, but has found its way to OTT only now. The film follows Ganesh's character Balu, who pretends to be visually-challenged to partake in a music reality show, but then 'witnesses' a murder that is passed off as a hit-and-run case. Can Balu prove the truth?

Varada

Vinod Prabhakar's latest action flick revolves around a contentious father-son relationship, with veteran actor Charan Raj playing his father. 

Ombatthane Dikku

Dayal Padmanabhan's latest directorial is the Kannada remake of the 2017 Tamil film Kurangu Bommai. Headlined by Loose Mada Yogi, Aditi Prabhudeva, Ashok, Saikumar and Sampath, among others, the film revolves around a mysterious duffel bag and the contents thereof.

Love Mocktail 2

Darling Krishna's sequel to his 2020 directorial debut, Love Mocktail, this one takes off two years after the events of the original and examines if his character, Aadi, has moved on from the loss of his wife Nidhima or not. Can time truly heal and will Aadi find love again?

Streaming on: Amazon Prime Video from March 15

Rider

Nikhil Kumar's third film in the lead, Rider, is a romantic action flick, directed by Vijay Kumar Konda. The narrative follows the hero, Surya's search for his childhood sweetheart. The film paired him with Kashmira Pardesi and Sampada Hulivana.

Tom and Jerry

This is Gantumoote fame Nischith Korodi's second film and pairs him with Chaitra Rao. The film is an exploration of how important one's socio-economic status is to get by in life. The film also stars Jai Jagdish, Tara, among others.

Drishya 2

The Kannada remake of the Malayalam film Drishyam 2, this Ravichandran led film is also the sequel to the 2014 Drishya. Directed by P Vasu, the Kannada version is a scene-by-scene remake of the original, with a comedy track by Sadhu Kokila added into the narrative. The film also stars Navya Nair, Aarohi Narayan, Pramod Shetty, Asha Sharath, Prabhu Ganesh, Lasya Nagaraj and Sonu Gowda, among others,

Family Pack

The Kannada comedy was the second of three PRK Productions to be released directly on Amazon Prime Video. The film, starring Likith Shetty and Amrutha Iyengar in the lead, was the former's second collaboration with director Arjun Kumar S after their earlier, Sankastha Kara Ganapati.

100

The Kannada remake of the Tamil film Thiruttu Payale 2, 100 was actor-filmmaker Ramesh Aravind's version. The film features him as a cybercrime police officer, who is hot on the heels of a cybercriminal, only to find that the case hits a little too close to home. The film also stars Rachita Ram and Purnaa.

One Cut Two Cut

Directed by Vamsidhar Bhogaraju, One Cut Two Cut is a film that brings Danish's Gopi to to the big screen. Introduced during the pandemic as a single character sketch, Gopi's cinematic outing sees him as an arts and crafts teacher and follows the happenings in his life as everything goes topsy-turvy. One Cut Two Cut also stars Samyukta Hornad and Prakash Belawadi in pivotal roles.

Badava Rascal

Daali Dhananjaya's debut production venture, Badava Rascal, released on the eve of Christmas last year to great success. Dhananjaya, who's been on a career high for a while, had his stock rise even further with Badava Rascal, the success of which was validated by the warm welcome the actor and his team got during all their promotional trips after the release.

Garuda Gamana Vrisbhabha Vahana

Raj B Shetty’s second directorial, Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana is a far cry from his debut, Ondu Motteya Kathe. A hard-hitting underworld saga set in Mangaladevi, Mangaluru, the story was inspired by a Yakshagana performance about an ego tussle between the gods. The film explores the reign of terror unleashed by Shiva (Raj) and Hari (Rishab Shetty) and the cop who is set on stopping them, Brahmayya (Gopalkrishna Deshpande). The film released in theatres on November 19 and came to OTT this Sankranti.

Bhajarangi 2

Choreographer-turned-director A Harsha’s third film with Century Star Shivarajkumar, this one released on October 29, but in a cruel twist of fate, coincided with the unfortunate demise of the actor’s youngest brother, Puneeth Rajkumar. A fantasy adventure, Bhajarangi 2 also starred Bhavana, Shruthi, Saurav Lokesh, Cheluvaraj, Kuri Pratap, Shivaraj KR Pete, among others.

Kannadiga

Jatta-fame director Giriraj’s latest got a direct-to-OTT release. Starring V Ravichandran in the lead, the period film was about a family of writers, whose responsibility it was, over several generations, to preserve the written word in Kannada. How one member of this family comes across Ferdinand Kittel, the German priest responsible for the first Kannada to English dictionary. The film also stars Paavana, Jamie Alter and Balaji Manohar in pivotal roles.

Puksatte Lifeu

One of the late Sanchari Vijay’s last films, Puksatte Lifeu released to great critic acclaim. The film revolves around Shahajahan, an honest key maker, finds himself becoming an unlikely accomplice to a bunch of policemen who are thieves themselves. What follows then is a rollercoaster ride filled with many laughs and some shocks.

Pathibeku.com

Anchor-turned-actor Sheetal Shetty’s first film, Pathibeku.com is about a girl’s hunt for the perfect match. The film explores how easy or difficult an arranged marriage can get based on a family’s ability to pander to the dowry/gift demands of the groom and his kin. Directed by Rakesh, the film also stars Aru Gowda in a pivotal role.

Madhagaja

Roaring Star Sriimurali’s film released to mixed reviews when it came in theatres in early December. A hardcore commercial film, the story followed the protagonist’s journey to a village on work, only to find that he has a personal connect to the place and the people there. Directed by Mahesh Kumar, who had made Ayogya earlier, the film paired Sriimurali with Ashika Ranganath. It also starred Devayani, Jagapati Babu and Garuda Ram, among others.

Kotigobba 3

The sequel to Kotigobba 2, the film was based on a story thread by lead actor Sudeep that was developed into a full-fledged script. While Kotigobba 2 teased the idea of Sudeep’s character Satya being one of a pair of twins, with the other called Shiva, the sequel builds on that and introduces the latter to audiences. Kotigobba 3 paired Sudeep with Madonna Sebastian and had Aftab Shivdasani, Nawab Shah, Shraddha Das, Abhirami, Rajesh Nataranga, among others on the cast.

Actor Suraj Gowda’s directorial debut, Ninna Sanihake introduced Dhanya Ramkumar, the granddaughter of late Kannada matinee idol Dr Rajkumar and daughter of veteran actor Ramkumar to Kannada cinema. Govinda Govinda

Sumanth Shailendra Babu’s comeback film to Kannada was the remake of the Telugu flick, Brochevarevarura and follows two parallel stories – one of a bunch of friends trying to help a classmate run away from home to pursue the love of her life, dance, and another, of an aspiring filmmaker’s attempt to get the dates of a popular heroine to get his debut film on floors. What happens when the twain meet forms the crux of the story.

Namma Oorina Rasikaru

Katte Entertainment’s debut production, Namma Oorina Rasikaru is a period show, based on a novel by Goruru Ramaswamy Iyengar. Directed by Nandita Yadav, the show boasts powerhouse performers like Rajesh Nataranga, Mandya Ramesh, B Suresha, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, Sunetra Pandit, Sujay Shastri, P Sheshadri, Veena Sundar, Sujay Shastri, among others, on its cast.
