In the last weekend of April, Kannada audiences have much to look forward at the box office, while the OTT offerings that have been announced are mostly dubbed titles. There are a bunch of new films in theatres this week, but it is also the Dr Rajkumar birth anniversary week, so one of his classics will be back onscreen.

Here’s a look at the films – Kannada original and dubbed – hitting theatres and OTT in the week of April 21 to April 27

Firefly

The directorial debut of actor Vamshi Krishna, Firefly has been produced by Niveditha Shivarajkumar. The journey of an imperfect guy in a perfect world – that’s how the team has described the story of Firefly, which follows the protagonist, Vivekananda, aka Vicky, a smart Maths teacher, who is plagued by feelings of loneliness. The film also stars Rachana Inder, Sudharani, Achyuth Kumar, among others, with Shivarajkumar chipping in with a cameo.

Gandhada Gudi

One of the late matinee idol Dr Rajkumar’s most celebrated films, Gandhada Gudi, which highlighted the need for protection of forests and conservation of wildlife, is coming back to theatres more than 50 years after it first came out. The 1973, which had Dr Rajkumar and Sahasa Simha Dr Vishnuvardhan pitted against each other, only to find out that they are long-lost brothers, was a big hit back in the day. On the occasion of Dr Rajkumar’s birth anniversary, Gandhada Gudi is being re-released. Earlier Dr Rajkumar's Operation Diamond Rocket was re-released in theatres.

Director Girish Kumar, who’d earlier made Bhavachitra, returns with a comedy called Gangster Alla Prankster, following a YouTuber, who makes prank videos, who inadvertently gets caught up in the city’s underworld. Girish plays the fun-loving YouTuber, while Ugramm-fame Tilk is a gangster. What happens when their world collides forms the crux of the movie.

Son of Muthanna

Directed by Srikanth Hunsur, Son of Muthanna stars Rangayana Raghu and Pranam Devaraj in the lead. The film, according to Kumari 21F fame Pranam, explores a father-son relationship, while also highlighting the multiple hats a man must wear as a father, which goes far beyond being the breadwinner of the family.

Bigg Boss Kannada Season 11 and Navagraha fame Dharma Keerthiraj is in the lead of this film by MR Srinivas, which puts the spotlight firmly on the devastating impact of alcoholism on families. The sufferings of those impacted the most by an alcoholic’s wayward ways is central to the plot. The film also stars Rekha Das, MS Umesh, Bangalore Nagesh, Shivakumar Aradhya, among others.

Director SU Arun’s Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2, is the sequel of a proposed 2-part tale. A story unfolding over one night, it focuses on the tensions between a police official and a former mob boss. When it escalates, the gangster gives a kill order and expects his former deputy, Kaali (Vikram), to do the needful. Kaali, though, is leading a life without violence with his wife. Will he be drawn into his old ways again? The film also stars SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Dushara Vijayan, among others. The Tamil original film will stream with Kannada audio.

L2: Empuraan

The sequel to Lucifer , L2 Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, had a good theatrical run, but was also affected by some backlash to what was seen as anti-Hindu rhetoric. The makers then effected several cuts to the film to appease the aggrieved section of audiences and this is the version that will now makes its way to OTT. The film stars Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, Prithviraj, Tovino Thomas, Suraj Venjaramoodu, among many others. The Malayalam original film will be available with Kannada audio as well.

The sequel to the 2023 film Mad, Mad (Square) is an action comedy starring Narne Nithiin, Sangeeth Sobhan, Ram Nitin and Priyanka Jawalkar, written and directed by Kalyan Shankar. The film follows three college buddies, as they navigate their way through campus life. The Telugu original film had opened to mixed reviews.
