The Independence Day weekend has been taken up by two non-Kannada biggies – War 2 and Coolie. There should have been a Kannada film – 45 – also in the mix, but debutant director Arjun Janya’s film faced VFX delays, forcing the makers to push it ahead indefinitely. A new release date is yet to be announced. Among the two films in theatres, though, only one, Coolie, has a Kannada dubbed version. Shows/screen count distribution is, obviously, skewed in favour of the Tamil original and Telugu versions.
If the buzz on social media is true, OTT is where Kannada audiences may have something for the long weekend. Two films that had clashed at the box office are headed for yet another clash on OTT, apparently.

Yuva Rajkumar’s sophomore film, Ekka, had a 25-day box office run, with conflicting reports about its performance. While the makers have claimed it to be a successful venture, without providing background, industry trackers say it has not recovered its budget. Either which way, the buzz is also that it will be on OTT this week, since there is no major Kannada film in theatres.
Directed by Rohit Padaki, Ekka paired Yuva Rajkumar with Sanjana Anand and Sampadaa Hulivana, while Poorna Mysore, Atul Kulkarni, Puneeth Rudranag, Shruti Krishna, Dr Suri, Harini, Adityaa, among others had pivotal roles.
Streaming on Amazon Prime Video from August 15, 2025 (Expected)

Gaali Janardhan Reddy’s son Kireeti Reddy debuted with the Kannada-Telugu bilingual directed by Mayabazar 2016 maker Radhakrishna Reddy. Junior did better business in its Telugu version, with the young actor receiving praise for his acting and dance skills. Despite the presence of Genelia Deshmukh and Sreeleela, among others like Rao Ramesh, V Ravichandran, etc., Junior had a short-lived theatrical outing.
Streaming on Amazon Prime Video from August 15, 2025 (Expected)

Superstar Rajinikanth's Coolie is one of the big releases of the week and the only one with a Kannada dubbed version. The Lokesh Kanagaraj film, which is, according to the filmmaker, not a part of his cinematic universe, also stars Upendra, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, Rachita Ram, Aamir Khan, among others. The Tamil original film will be available with a Kannada dubbed version.
Releasing in theatres on August 14
Q. Is Ekka a commercial hit?
A. There are conflicting reports about the success of Ekka at the box office. Conservative estimates peg the film’s budget at around Rs 15 cr, although there are reports of it being near Rs 20 cr also. Industry trackers reckon that the film grossed a little over Rs 11 crore in its lifetime. The film team has claimed that Ekka is a blockbuster success, but have provided no official figures to back this.
Q. Who is Kireeti Reddy?
A. Kireeti Reddy is the son of politician and mining baron Gaali Janardhan Reddy. He hails from Ballari and is an ardent fan of the late Puneeth Rajkumar and Jr NTR. Kireeti made his acting debut in 2025 with the Kannada-Telugu bilingual film Junior. The Telugu version did fairly well at the box office.
