After a very dismal first 6 months of the year, all hopes are on the films of the second half in Kannada cinema. While it is Yuva Rajkumar’s Ekka that is expected to end this drought on July 18, filmmaker MansoRe, for instead, is counting on family audiences, especially those who liked 777 Charlie to watch his latest, an intense love story. There are a couple of Kannada originals on OTT, but the dubbed options may be more interesting this week. So, if Superman is not what you are interested in this week, we tell you what’s on OTT and in theatres for Kannada audiences.

Moonwalk

Set in the 80s, this Vinod AK directorial, was ready a few years ago, but made it to theatres only after the might of Listin Stephen and Lijo Jose Pellissery was thrown behind it. In theatres, the film, which is about a group of small-town boys taking to break dance in the Michael Jackson era, had a decent reception and the Malayalam original film is now out on OTT, where it is being appreciated for the sense of nostalgia it evokes. The film is available with Kannada audio.

Mr Rani

Deepak Subramanya is Raja, an aspiring actor, who finds stardom, albeit while pretending to be an actress called Rani in director Madhu Chandra’s comedy that released in theatres in February this year. The Kannada original film paired Parvathy Nair opposite Deepak. It will be available with Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam audio options as well.

Streaming on Lionsgate Play from July 11. Also available with OTTplay Premium

Karki

The Kannada remake of Pa Ranjith’s Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal, Karki, directed by Vasanthakala Paravai fame maker Pavithran, which released in September last year, is now headed to OTT. The film was meant to begin streaming in June, but was then pushed ahead. It follows a law graduate who hails from a lower caste and the oppression he faces along the way.

Narivetta

Tovino Thomas leads this action drama inspired by the real-life 2003 Muthanga incident, wherein the police opened fire on tribals who were leading a protest against a delay in land allocation. Directed by Anuraj Manohar, the film, which also stars Suraj Venjaramoodu, Cheran, Aarya Salim, among others, comes to OTT a little after a month since its theatrical release. The film was an average hit at the box office. The Malayalam original will have Kannada audio option to stream.

8 Vasantalu

Director Phanindra Narsetti’s is an emotional journey spanning 8 years in the protagonist’s life. The Telugu original film stars Ananthika Sanilkumar, Hanu Reddy, explores grief and love and a bevvy of profound ideas. Kannada audio will be available for the Telugu film.

Doora Theera Yaana

Harivu, Act 1978, Nathicharami and 19.20.21 maker MansoRe’s tryst with a slightly more ‘commercial’ format of storytelling, Doora Theera Yaana, is one of the major releases of the week. The film follows Akash and Bhoomi, played by Vijay Kumar, and Priyanka, who have been together for 5 years, and then take off on a week-long trip to really spend time with each other before their impending engagement.

For a film team, it would be unimaginable if the final print goes missing enroute to being uploaded on the satellite for its theatrical release. But that’s exactly what happens to two ADs, when they lose the hard disk with the final copy of their film, Captain Karnataka. Can they find it and upload it in time for the film’s first show? Starring Girish G, Aniruddha Sastry, Rohit Srinath, the film is directed by the former.
