Six months into 2025, well over 100 theatrical releases, of which, perhaps, a fifth or less have made it to streaming. That’s the current situation of the Kannada film industry. This week, there are no officially confirmed original titles headed audience’s way and there aren’t any major dubbed titles either on OTT. The big release, of course, is Jurassic Park Rebirth, but there are a couple of Kannada films that maybe of interest to audiences.

Kapata Nataka Sutradhari

Debutant director and actor Dhiraj MV’s new-age political satire, Kapata Nataka Sutradhari revolves around the fallout of an incident that plays out at a historical temple. A place of worship where miracles are meant to happen and all that one needs to do is crawl under a stone statue of an elephant and ardently make a wish. Trouble brews when one such person gets stuck under the statue and is revealed to be a Muslim man.

Hebbuli Cut

Debutant director Bheemrao’s social commentary on the class oppression seen in belts of north Karnataka picks the subject of Kiccha Sudeep’s trendy hairstyle from Hebbuli and how access to salons offering this particular haircut is not available to one and all. The filmmaker explains it as a reflection on social injustice, and the strength required to claim dignity in an unequal world. The film, presented in theatres by Ninasam Sathish, stars Mounesh Nataranga, Mahantesh, Mahadev Hadapad, among others.

Jungle Mangal

Filmmaker Rakshit Kumar’s Jungle Mangal follows a young couple seeking a little privacy to hang out at a remote location. Their special moment, though, goes haywire when their plan is discovered by a group of villagers, who then set out to find the lovers and teach them a lesson. Starring Yash Shetty as protagonist, for a change, the film also has Ugramm Manju, Harshita Ramachandra, among others on board.
