It is the Kantara Chapter 1 week, so all eyes, will, no doubt, be on the theatrical performance of actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty’s prequel to the 2022 mega hit, Kantara. There’s no other Kannada theatrical release this week, and the competition, the Dhanush-directed Idli Kadai, does not have a Kannada dubbed version. The Hindi film Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari is getting a limited release in Karnataka, compared to the volume of screens/shows that Kantara is getting in different languages, mainly Kannada. On OTT, there are a couple of films that may pique interest, but, otherwise, it is a dull week for Kannada.

Three years after a ‘mannina kathe’ that he brought to the big screen became a runaway hit, actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty is back with yet another rooted tale of man vs nature, set within the same mysterious forest – Kantara. Only this time, he takes the story back by several centuries – a time when nature and spirit worship took wing. He tells a story of a conflict between a tyrannical king and the downtrodden tribals of Kantara and the ensuing uprising. The film also stars Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah, Jayaram, Shaneel Gautham, Pramod Shetty, Rakesh Poojary, among many others.
Releasing in theatres on October 2, 2025

Director Radhakrishna Reddy’s launchpad for Kireeti Reddy, the son of mining baron and politico, Gaali Janardhan Reddy, was a Kannada-Telugu bilingual. The film also stars Sreeleela, V Ravichandran, Genelia Deshmukh, Sudharani, Achyuth Kumar, Kiran Srinivas, Rao Ramesh, Kuri Pratap, among others.

Crazy Star Ravichandran’s second offering on OTT this week has him in the lead, in a film in which the actor was given a one-man show to shoulder. The film, about an artist, and his struggle with grief, after losing his wife and daughter, hit theatres with absolutely no promotions, so, most people were not even aware that it had come and gone.
