Laughing Buddha, the second film by director Bharath Raj M, and produced by actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty, has landed on OTT. It was earlier reported that the film had been picked up by Amazon Prime Video for digital streaming, with October 18 set as premiere date. Well, the platform has stuck to this schedule and the Pramod Shetty film is now available to stream in Kannada with English subtitles.
The streaming rights were determined only post the theatrical release and audience reception to the film. In fact, Rishab had spoken about this prior to the release that even with his post-Kantara clout, he was not able to swing a deal. Two other Rishab productions – Pedro and Shivamm – both of which were film festival darlings, are also not available to stream yet.
Laughing Buddha, meanwhile, had Pramod, who is more often seen in villain or supporting roles, as the leading man. He played a police constable, Govardhan, who loves food, which, in turn, shows in his burgeoning waistline. He and a few colleagues get called out by a superior officer about their unhealthy ways and given a deadline to shape up or ship out.
Govardhan decides to do something about his situation and enrols at a weight-loss camp, but not long after, he is called back to duty to help crack a case. Govardhan, after all, has a special skill of getting culprits to confess and even lead the cops to recover stolen goods, which, his superior officer uses as a last-ditch effort in a case he could not crack and may have even made worse, after knocking out the perpetrator during interrogation, rendering him with memory loss.
Can Govardhan’s approach jog the guy’s memories? That’s what Laughing Buddha is about. The film also stars Diganth Manchale, Teju Belawadi and Sundar Raj, among others, on the cast.
