The Hindi TV industry has often been inspired by game shows which are a massive hit in Hollywood. The latest one is Lava Ka Dhaava, a game show inspired by last year’s hit show, Floor Is Lava.

Javed Jaffrey’s previous show Takeshi’s Castle too was inspired from a Japanese game show of the same name and recent release LOL: Hasse Toh Phasse too have a Hollywood show to thank for. The trend, however, started a long time ago.

Here’s our list of Indian versions of Western shows that are currently streaming online:

1. Lava Ka Dhaava (Netflix) - Based on: Floor Is Lava

Floor Is Lava is essentially a virtual reality game where contestants are sent into a world where the floor is actually made up of lava. In order to save themselves from getting eliminated, they have to stand on furniture or anything that is not lava. They also have to be aware of booby traps that could lead to disqualification. The Hollywood show was hosted by Rutledge Wood. Its Hindi version is going to be hosted by Jaaved Jaffrey. The show is slated to release on May 5, 2021. Both Floor Is Lava and Lava Ka Dhaava can be accessed on Netflix in India.

2. Lol: Hasse Toh Phasse (Prime) - Based on: LOL

Amazon Prime backed the idea of a show where participants, who are comedians, are locked up in a house. They are supposed to make one another laugh, but must hold their laughter, if they do not wish to be disqualified. The show was initiated in Australia by the name LOL: Last One Laughing. Actress-singer-comedian Rebel Wilson was its judge. Out of the 10 Australian comedians, the last one would get to take home AUD 100,000. A similar version of the show, LOL: Hasse Toh Phasse, was introduced in India and was hosted by Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani, The show released on Amazon Prime Video on April 30, 2021.

3. Khatron Ke Khiladi (Voot) - Based on: Fear Factor

Fear Factor was introduced in America as a stunt show, where celebrities were called to overcome their fears in life. Comedian and UFC commentator Joe Rogan hosted the show. Interestingly, the series itself was adapted from a Dutch version called Now or Neverland. The Indian show, Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, followed the US format and is hosted by filmmaker Rohit Shetty. Both Fear Factor (which ended in 2018) and Khatron Ke Khiladi (last aired in 2020) can be streamed on Voot.

4. Bigg Boss (Voot) - Based on: Big Boss

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty probably made Bigg Boss popular in India after her stint in Big Boss UK. Although the series was adapted in India thanks to Shilpa’s stunt, superstar Salman Khan has now become the face of the show. In this show, various celebrities are locked inside the Bigg Boss house without any external help. They have to do their own chores, manage staying locked up in a house full of other people for 100 days, with live cameras recording their activities 24x7. The show, which is a big hit in India, can be viewed on Voot. Bigg Boss Kannada, Bigg Boss Bangla and Bigg Boss Marathi can also be streamed on the platform. The Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam versions, meanwhile, can be viewed on Disney+ Hotstar.

5. Kaun Banega Crorepati (Sony Liv) - Based on: Who Wants To Be A Millionaire

The British were the first to start the show called Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, in which host Chris Tarrant picks a few contestants through a selection process. The contestant is then tested his or her general knowledge. Each correct answer brings the contestant closer to one million pounds. A similar concept was adapted in India, with Amitabh Bachchan being the host for the Hindi version. Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) also swung the fortune in Big B’s favour and helped him recover from a financial crisis.https://i0.wp.com/thesillytv.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/lava.jpg?fit=1024%2C576&ssl=1
