Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited Lokesh Kanagaraj directed Leo is coming to theatres on October 19 as a Dasara festival special. The trailer of the action-packed family entertainer was revealed a little while ago, with versions in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. Stating that the Kannada dubbing in the trailer was good, audiences are all praise for it and hopeful that the #serveinmylangugage initiative is not just limited to the trailer. Singer Chinmayi Sripadaa has dubbed for Trisha's character in all versions of the film.
Taking to social media, several netizens remarked that they were looking forward to watching Leo in Kannada and urged the team to ensure adequate number of screens and shows are allocated for the same. Very often, what happens is that films are dubbed in Kannada, but on release day, the original version takes up the most screens, with the show allocation for the Kannada version remaining an eyewash. Distributors state that exhibitors remain reluctant to take Kannada-dubbed versions and prefer the original, and that the clamour for this only remains online. The ground reality, they claim is that the occupancy for a Kannada-dubbed version of a big Telugu or Tamil film is far less than for the original.
Case in point being the most recent Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer. The film’s Karnataka theatrical business was a tad over Rs 70 crore with only a tenth of it coming from the Kannada version. While there is an audience for dubbed content, the footfall ratio does not make it a viable business option for film teams to allot more screens for the Kannada version.
Meanwhile, the trailer of Leo hints at Vijay essaying a double roles, one of a family man and another, a mystery character, with the actions of the latter adversely affecting the former and pushing him to extremes in protecting his loved ones. The Anirudh Ravichandran musical also stars Gautham Vasudev Menon, Sanjay Dutt, Trisha, Arjun Sarja, among others.
