Vijay Deverakonda's Hindi debut in Liger has fallen well short of the promise. The actor's reputation as the 'next big thing' in Indian cinema preceded him as he arrived on the Mumbai shores and things seem placed perfectly for a grand showing: media hysteria, Koffee with Karan appearance, and the whole gamut to side him in the pursuits. And yet, the film failed to deliver upon release and things took a sour turn within no time.
As Liger opened to poor reviews, it became apparent soon enough that the film was yet another mishit to join the likes of Laal Singh Chaddha, Raksha Bandhan, and others. The film, which also stars Ananya Panday as the female lead, was criticized heavily for the lacklustre writing and the outdated portrayal of women with the audience, in particular, not taking kindly to director Puri Jagannadh's latest venture.
Liger is now one of the lowest films on IMDb of all time and by far the worst in Vijay Deverakonda's career so far. The film currently owns the rating of 3.0/10 with over 37,000 votes to its name: Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer Laal Singh Chaddha, which fared somewhat similarly at the domestic box office, is rated 5.0/10 on IMDb with Akshay Kumar's Raksha Bandhan owning 4.6/10 on IMDb. Anurag Kashyap's latest sci-fi rendition Dobaaraa too has suffered at the hands of the audience and is rated poorer than Liger on IMDb with 2.8/10.
The Taapsee Pannu starrer comes as the official remake of the 2018 Spanish mystery-thriller Mirage and despite the positive feedback from the premiere shows ahead of the theatrical release, Dobaaraa failed to charm the audiences. The rampant 'Boycott' trend on social media too could be deemed a prominent factor in the ongoing debacle of Hindi cinema.
Liger came out in cinema halls on August 25 as a Telugu-Hindi bilingual with the Hindi version coming out a day after the Telugu release. With the latter receiving negative reviews right off the bat, the box office performance took a major hit over the course with the film failing to live up to the set expectations. Liger (Hindi), however, managed to beckon the audiences to the theatres and is currently looking better compared to the Telugu version at the box office.
Liger, over the course of five days, has reportedly earned close to Rs. 38 crores (net) across all five languages (the film was also dubbed and released in Kannada, Tamil, and Malayalam).
