Liger, the latest film from Vijay Deverakonda, was released last week. The sports drama is directed by Puri Jagannadh and produced by Karan Johar. On Thursday, the film earned Rs 1.25 crore from paid screenings, followed by Rs 4.50 crore on Friday. Liger grossed Rs 33.12 crore on its first day worldwide. According to Bollywood Hungama, the film earned between Rs 4.10 and Rs 4.50 crore on Saturday. Until Saturday, the Hindi version of the sports drama had earned nearly Rs 10.25 crore.

While Liger marks Vijay's Bollywood debut, it also marks Panday's first foray into the Telugu film industry.

Box Office India reports that "Liger had an average opening day in Hindi, earning 4.50 crore net on Friday, in addition to the 1.25 crore net earned on paid previews on Thursday. The paid preview collections were pretty good in terms of occupancy, but if they hadn't been there, the film could have had a better first day as reports spill out to the first day."

In Maharashtra, CP Berar, Bihar, and Odisha, Liger is performing better. The Puri Jagannadh-directed film has international appeal because it features boxing legend Mike Tyson, who makes his acting debut in the Indian film industry. Other key actors include Ramya Krishnan, Ronit Roy, Vishu Reddy, Ali, Makarand Deshpande, and Getup Srinu.

Vijay Deverakonda, in an interview, said, "It's an exciting time for Telugu cinema. Baahubali demonstrated what is possible when making films for the country. Telugu cinema is doing extremely well, which gives me great pride. What we're doing with Liger was eventually heading down the road that Baahubali paved."

The Dear Comrade actor reveals that when he heard the script, narrated to him by Puri Jagannadh, he had a vision for Liger.

"I loved the script and rescheduled everything I had planned to proceed with Liger. I had a mental image of how I wanted my character to look, so I called my trainer and showed him a photo of my favourite boxer athlete."

The Telugu-speaking Vijay Deverakonda boarded the bus to Bollywood under the big banner of Karan Johar's Dharma Productions with Liger. When asked how the collaboration with Karan came about, the actor revealed that Karan had seen and appreciated his performance in Arjun Reddy and had been following his career ever since.
