Lightyear, the original sci-fi action-adventure film from Disney and Pixar, has a new trailer. The authentic origin narrative of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy, will be released on June 17, 2022, and will follow the renowned space ranger on an interplanetary adventure.
In a statement, the director, Angus MacLane, said that Buzz's world was always a source of fascination for him. In Toy Story, there seemed to be this amazing backstory to him being a Space Ranger that was only hinted at, and he has always wanted to learn more about it. Thus, his Lightyear pitch was, "What was the movie that Andy saw that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy?" That was a film he wanted to see, and now he has been allowed to do so.
Keke Palmer, Dal Soules, and Taika Waititi join the previously announced Chris Evans, who lends his voice to Buzz, as a group of ambitious recruits. Sox, Buzz's robot companion, is voiced by Peter Sohn, and the cast also includes Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr.
The director further added that Lightyear's cast is truly a dream team. Each of the actors quickly immersed themselves in their roles, allowing them to fool around throughout the recording sessions. This added a level of particular to the material, elevating it and adding depth to the characters' interactions, shared MacLane. He also said that working with such a great and generous cast has been an honour.
Lightyear has agreed to be scored by Michael Giacchino, an award-winning composer. Giacchino has a long history with Pixar, having won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy for his work on the original score for Up. Among his other Pixar credits are The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Cars 2, Inside Out, Coco, and Incredibles 2. Walt Disney Records will release The Lightyear Original Motion Picture Soundtrack this summer, 2022.
