Malayalam director Lijo Jose Pellissery’s movies have been winning international acclaim in recent years and his latest movie Churuli too has caught the attention in the world stage. The movie has been nominated for two awards at the 15th Asian Film Awards to be held on October 8 in Busan.

The film’s crew Gokuldas and Renganaath Ravee were nominated for the Best Production Design and Best Sound categories, respectively. In the previous edition too, the crew of Lijo’s Jallikattu were nominated for Best Cinematography (Girish Gangadharan) and Best Original Music (Prashanth Pillai), which was clinched by Ranveer Singh’s Gully Boy that year.

Churuli (Labyrinth) is among the three Indian films that have found nominations in the prestigious awards, which will be hosted along with the 26th Busan International Film Festival.

The Disciple, which won the FIPRESCI International Critics Award and Best Screenplay Award at the Venice International Film Festival, has been nominated for Best Film along with Wife of a Spy, Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, One Second and The Book of Fish. Its director and scriptwriter Chaitanya Tamhane has also been nominated for Best Screenplay. The Disciple is currently streaming on Netflix.

PS Vinothraj’s Pebbles, which won the Tiger Award at the International Film Festival, Rotterdam earlier this year, has been nominated for Best New Director award.

The Awards will also honour popular South Korean actor Lee Byung-hun, who is known for his roles in movies such as I Saw the Devil, Masquerade and Inside Men, and series such as Mr Sunshine. He will be given the Asian Film Excellence Award.
